Summer is slowly saying goodbye to us, while the first cool nights are appearing! With September, then, we welcome autumn as well!
After the summer break, the gardeners roll up their sleeves and start their work in the garden. Our main gardening work is to take care of the frequency of watering - we decrease or increase - depending on the weather conditions. As temperatures change a lot and humidity increases, the plants are in a phase of active growth and need our immediate care.
As for the garden and our flower beds:
We collect the fallen leaves and clean our flower beds as much as possible. The rise in humidity this time in combination with the heat, creates the right conditions for annoying insects to grow.
We start to increase the fertilization in the plants, depending on the weather conditions. It is best to avoid when the temperature reaches the limits of the heat.
This season is the best time to check our bulbs. Once our summer plants are dry, we remove the bulbs from the soil and store them in a warm and dry place. We also check the spring bulbs we have already stored and discard those that are soft or rotten. We plant them as soon as the temperature drops to 18o C and the weather has cooled.
Do not forget to prune the trees you need and mow the lawn. If we want, we can cut some summer flowers before the weather cools down, and dry them.
Of course, we do not forget our potted plants inside and outside the house:
We begin to slowly prepare the indoor plants that are going to return inside the house. That is why it is very important to thoroughly clean both the pots with their saucers and our plants, in order to avoid the development of harmful insects.
We start to increase the fertilization in the plants, depending on the weather conditions. It is best to avoid when the temperature reaches the limits of the heat.
We control the soil moisture and water accordingly. We do not forget that too much water can rot our plant.
Prune where and when needed to enhance autumn flowering. We pay special attention to chrysanthemums and poinsettia.
September is the transition month from the heat of summer to the cold of winter. At this time we are completing any work we have started since the summer and we are planning our gardening work for next month.
We do not forget to still enjoy your afternoons in your garden, before the weather cools down and our garden rests.
Good autumn!
